Welding class provides career option for DORS students

Welding classes at the Christel House Indianapolis Manual campus offer students the opportunity to explore a career option and earn job certifications. For the first time, adult students from Christel House DORS are participating in the program. Nichelle Thomas admits she knew nothing about welding – but found it a great challenge to master. “It was a fun and frustrating experience at the same time,” she says smiling.

Nichelle was one of twelve DORS students enrolled to earn class credit meeting twice a week over eight weeks. Larry Lynch, Welding and Maintenance Teacher for Christel House Indianapolis, was impressed with the energy from the first-time welding students. “It was nice to see the excitement of the class,” he says. “They were very enthusiastic!” He anticipates some of the students in this first DORS class will make welding a career. The welding class gave Nichelle the final credits she needed to graduate. She offers high praise for her instructor. “Larry is a GREAT teacher,” she says. “He made it very understandable.” Nichelle says she’ll miss her DORS classes. “I love the program.” She encourages anyone considering earning their high school diploma to enroll in the DORS program. “It’s never too late,” she says. “There’s nothing stopping you but you!”
