A national organization devoted to fostering character development in schools and communities across the country announced Christel House Academy West (CHAW) in Indianapolis as the only school in Indiana to be certified for their 2020 Promising Practices. “We are honored by Character.org’s award,” says Donald Carver, CHAW Principal. “Through the leadership of Dr. Milanda Penn, Vice Principal, and our school team, Academy West was recognized for our school core values, expectations and programming.” This year’s Character.org development initiatives include peer mentoring, service-learning, and conflict resolution approaches. Many of the Promising Practices also include parent and local community involvement. “The great thing about this award is the entire staff and students play a role in it,” says Carver. “It is all about the culture of caring, compassion, citizenship, high expectations and accountability.” Character.org will honor each 2020 Promising Practice recipient at its National Forum in Washington, D.C. in March 2021.
