Learning English goes online at DORS

Adults enroll at Christel House DORS to earn a high school diploma. But for many students, learning English is their first lesson. Brittany Petree, ESL (English as a Second Language) Teacher at Christel House DORS says while her students haven’t been able to meet in-person, the learning continues online. Students in ESL classes receive lessons on grammar, reading, listening and writing. In a classroom, Brittany relies on a white board to connect with students. But with e-learning, she’s had to find new techniques with technology. “It changes the way I teach. I keep my lessons very concise.” Students in ESL classes speak many languages, from Spanish to Arabic. But Brittany notes, “In class, everything is in English.” She says the adults support each other. “If someone is having trouble understanding, they will translate for them.” Brittany says its rewarding to watch their progress – and the teamwork to earn a diploma. “Seeing them graduate, that’s exciting.”
