DORS graduate turns adversity into a career

“I couldn’t get out of a bad situation,” admits Lesvi Cruz-Barragan about an abusive relationship. “But coming to Indianapolis, there was hope – I saw a second chance.” Today, the Christel House DORS graduate is Founder and CEO of Amor Latino Family Services. A victim advocate, Lesvi counsels domestic violence perpetrators. “I knew I had a lot to give, I just didn’t know how to go about it.” Lesvi earned dual credits for college while working for her diploma at Christel House DORS, the adult high school. She was awarded the Ivy Tech scholarship at the DORS graduation ceremony. “I knew then I could continue my education,” she says. While going to school for her Associate Degree in Applied Science, Lesvi worked for the Rose Project, a family counseling organization providing family services. With three years of certification training and experience, Lesvi decided to create Amor Latino, focused on serving Spanish-speaking clients. “I’ve surprised myself and I am very grateful,” she says. “Christel House has been the biggest stepping stone to my success!”
