Tamale tradition offers students insight to special needs

A Valentine’s Day tradition provided breakfast tamales for Christel House Mexico (CHMX). The morning meal also offered students insight to people with special needs. Daunis is a Mexican nonprofit that produces tamales for events and sales around the country. The organization uses food production as a training experience for people with Down Syndrome. Participants develop motor and social skills while being introduced to a life of independence through work. This is the third year Daunis has visited CHMX. After the tamale breakfast, Daunis leaders and participants met with high school classes, giving Christel House students a chance to learn and understand the challenges special needs workers face.
