Fighting food insecurity

Over 90% of Christel House Academy children receive free or reduced lunches. Knowing where their next meal is coming is an issue for many children in Indianapolis. Christel House offers much of a child’s nutritional needs each school day. But to fight food insecurity on weekends, Christel House teams up with Gleaners Food Bank of Indianapolis. The Gleaners Back Sacks program provides food packages each Friday for children to share with their families. “Many students come to school hungry every day,” says Marian Walsh, Interim Principal at Christel House Academy West. “It’s wonderful to be able to help them on weekends and over breaks.” For caregivers, the support is appreciated. “Getting a Back Sack each week helps me keep my kids fed,” says a parent of a child at West. “We are so thankful.”
