Readers win competition in South Africa

For a team of seventh graders from Christel House South Africa (CHSA) reading is not only fun, but competitive, too. The students won first prize at the annual Reading Competition held at the Lansdowne Civic Center. As part of the reading contest, participants were judged on their ability to read an extract from a book in one of the two language categories, English or Afrikaans. Students were judged on reading speed, comprehension, and points were awarded for overall presentation such as eye contact with the judges, body language and facial expression. For the first time ever, Christel House South Africa walked away with first prize in both categories! Ms. Celeste, CHSA school librarian, coached the hard-working students. “The competition was very strong but Ms. Celeste prepared us very well,” says Azile M. “I am already looking forward to next year’s competition.”
