Christel House Mexico’s (CHMX) Class of 2024 has set records for university admissions – including nine students admitted to The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) consistently ranked as Mexico’s best university. The students accepted from CHMX represent nearly 20% of the graduation class according to Harry Guest La Vercombe, College & Careers Coordinator. “UNAM admits around 10% of their applicants, meaning our students were almost twice as likely to enter into the UNAM than the average student in Mexico.”
Another nine students were admitted to UAM (Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana) and another seven students were admitted to IPN (National Polytechnic Institute). “This is particularly special, as these three public universities are completely free and some of the most renowned in the country,” said La Vercombe. “UNAM is the #1 university in the country, IPN is #3, and UAM is 5th or 7th depending on the list. Entering the UNAM in Mexico is the equivalent of entering into Harvard on 100% scholarship, so reaching these incredible goals means more CHMX students are on the fast track out of the cycle of poverty.”
“I wanted to mention a couple of students, Oliver N. and Luz del C. These two students accomplished the incredible task of being admitted to ALL THREE of our top public universities,” marveled La Vercombe. “Nata” scored an astounding 108/120 on his entrance exam, enough to enter one of the most strived-for majors at the institution, actuarial sciences. Luz decided to go to the IPN, the top university for engineering, for industrial chemical engineering. “Each of them has friends and community already built into the school they are attending,” he said. “They don’t have to do it alone because eight other CHMX students were admitted to their university. It’s exciting to see the way these communities have formed thanks to the record-breaking results of the class of 2024.”
