David Harris on measuring what matters in education

Last modified on January 14, 2026

In a recent Indianapolis Business Journal opinion piece, “Let’s Not Waste the Opportunity to Measure What Matters,” David Harris weighed in on Indiana’s proposed new K–12 accountability system, applauding state leaders for moving beyond a narrow focus on test scores toward a more comprehensive view of student success that emphasizes skills, experiences, and readiness for life after high school. Drawing on Christel House’s nearly three decades of focusing on life outcomes, David explained that academic achievement should be a means to an end, rather than the end itself. He argued that if adopted and fully embraced, the proposed changes could strengthen education’s role as a true equalizer and better prepare students to thrive as adults.
