On June 7, 2025, just one day before her birthday, LaTasha Hawkins crossed the stage as a graduate of Christel House DORS, the adult high school. It was, she says, the best birthday gift she could have given herself. For LaTasha, finishing high school had once felt out of reach. As a teenager, she drifted away from school, influenced by the wrong crowd and a growing belief that education simply wasn’t for her at the time. Like many adult learners, life moved forward before her diploma did. That changed with a conversation—and a New Year’s resolution. Encouraged by her cousin, LaTasha learned about the Christel House DORS program, and together they committed to returning to school and earning their diplomas. What began as a goal quickly became a turning point.
FINDING A SUCCESSFUL CAREER
Balancing school, work, and home life was no small task. LaTasha describes her time at DORS as a “roller-coaster ride,” marked by daily challenges and constant demands on her time and energy. But she never quit. Reminding herself that “quitters never win and winners never quit,” she persevered—graduating with a 2.8 GPA and a renewed sense of confidence.
What made the difference, she says, was the unwavering support of the DORS staff. Their belief in her success pushed her to aim higher and keep going, even when it was difficult. And that encouragement didn’t stop at graduation.
Through the Christel House College & Careers program, LaTasha earned certification as a welder and went on to pick up a second trade as a CNC machinist, a field she says she truly loves. Today, she is employed as a CNC Machinist at AMPG, building a stable and rewarding career. That success has had a ripple effect beyond the workplace. “Yes, it has impacted my family,” LaTasha says simply, underscoring how one achievement can open doors for many.
As she reflects on her journey, LaTasha is quick to credit those who stood beside her along the way. “My partner has played a major part in my success, and I’m deeply grateful for her unwavering support.” She also extends heartfelt thanks to the entire Christel House DORS team, with special appreciation for Kendall Price, Tori Lividini, Leshauna Kennedy, Briana Lee, and Courtney Thomas, who consistently checked in, offered guidance, and provided support every step of the way.
LaTasha’s story is a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to rewrite the narrative, and that with determination, support, and opportunity, resolutions can become life-changing realities.
