With over 25 years of global experience, we’ve learned a lot—and we’re excited to share it with you. This is where we unpack the stories, strategies and insights that drive our mission. Dive in.
Angel K’s early life was deeply marked by financial instability: a reality that shadowed her dreams from the very start. Her parents worked tirelessly, determined to provide for their family, yet despite their efforts, even basic needs remained a persistent challenge. Education, something Angel valued profoundly, seemed perpetually out of reach. When unpaid fees forced her out of school, it was more than just a setback; it felt like losing a vital part of herself. The classroom had always been her sanctuary, a place where she thrived and found joy. At that point, it seemed her dreams had been abruptly halted, leaving her facing a harsh and uncertain future.
The trajectory of Angel’s life shifted dramatically when her brother joined Christel House India. His daily stories painted vivid images of a school full of warmth, laughter, and endless learning opportunities. Inspired by these stories, Angel felt a spark of hope reigniting within her. In 2004, this newfound hope became reality as Angel stepped into her own Christel House classroom, initially as a timid fourth grader. Her initial uncertainty quickly melted away thanks to the genuine warmth, comprehensive support, and sincere encouragement she experienced from her teachers and peers. Christel House quickly became more than just a school—it became a place of belonging and self-discovery.
Christel House provided far more than just academic instruction; it offered a sanctuary of comprehensive support. Angel benefited from nutritious meals, reliable transportation, complete healthcare services, and essential social support, resources crucial for her development and well-being. These elements combined to create an environment where Angel could focus entirely on her education and personal growth without the distractions and worries of external hardships. Over nine transformative years, Angel not only excelled academically but also flourished emotionally and socially, building deep friendships and the self-confidence needed to navigate life’s challenges.
One of the most defining moments of Angel’s journey was her participation in the Calver Leadership Camp in the United States. For six months, Angel found herself immersed in a diverse and dynamic environment, learning alongside peers from 40 different countries. This remarkable experience expanded her worldview dramatically, teaching her invaluable lessons about leadership, tolerance, adaptability, and the importance of global citizenship. Returning home, Angel carried with her a renewed sense of resilience, viewing obstacles as opportunities and fears as chances to demonstrate courage.
Angel graduated in 2013, armed with a profound sense of purpose and commitment to making a meaningful impact. Driven by a desire to give back to the community that shaped her, she pursued undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Psychology. With these credentials, Angel returned to Christel House, this time not as a student but as a dedicated school counselor. Today, Angel draws upon her lived experiences to mentor and support students facing similar challenges, offering them empathy, understanding, and encouragement. Through her work, she embodies the Christel House promise: with genuine opportunity and holistic support, children from underserved communities can become influential change-makers in their own right.
Angel K’s remarkable story underscores the bold belief at the heart of Christel House: education alone is not sufficient to break the cycle of poverty. By providing comprehensive support, Christel House empowers students to not merely transcend poverty but to dismantle its grip entirely. Angel’s journey demonstrates the extraordinary potential that exists within every child, given the right environment and support. As Christel DeHaan, founder of Christel House, famously said, “Every child deserves a seat at the table of life.” Angel’s life is proof of the profound and lasting impact of sustained, holistic support. Join us in our foundational, transformative approach, and together, let’s ensure every child has the opportunity to thrive.
