She earned a diploma from Christel House DORS, the adult high school, in the middle of a pandemic. But that’s not all Marisol Serrano did. She also earned a job certification. Now the 2020 graduate is enjoying a new career – as a welder! “I love every moment of it,” she says.
Students attending Christel House DORS are strongly encouraged to continue their education after earning their diploma. Marisol chose the vocational route. “The experience I had at DORS was amazing,” she says. Over the years, Marisol had various jobs on production lines. But she wanted more. Through DORS, she realized a passion for welding, a field dominated by men. But Marisol’s not the only woman discovering welding opportunities. The Latinas Welding Guild in Indianapolis helps Latinas and non-Latina women gain access to welding skills and certifications. Marisol now volunteers as Community Outreach Assistant for the organization. She’s proud to be a welder for J.L. Walter & Associates, a steel and fabrication company. Marisol offers enthusiastic advice to anyone considering going back to earn their high school diploma – do it at DORS. “The support from the staff was wonderful,” she says. “They believe in you.”
