Christel House hosts Math Support Hub

An innovative partnership has introduced a Math Support Hub at Christel House South Africa (CHSA). The Hub helps over 200 students from CHSA and three community high schools participate in after-school lessons to prepare them for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematic) careers. For Lisakhanya M., Grade 11, the tutoring sessions help her grasp and understand challenging math concepts.“Historically, South Africa struggles with math,” says Faheema Harris, STEM Department Head at CHSA. Meeting with The Capitec Foundation, Adri Marais, CHSA CEO, discussed wanting to help Christel House students while also assisting less fortunate schools in the area. A partnership was born. “Capitec is able to optimise their offering by bringing all the students together in one place,” says Adri. The tutoring sessions are hosted at Christel House. The Capitec Foundation provides funding for the program. Students receive transportation, math resources and meals at the tutoring sessions. “We collaborated with Christel House to serve as a hub, supporting learners from surrounding schools, leveraging on each other’s offering for a greater benefit of the community,” says Neptal Khoza, the Head of Corporate Social Investment at the Capitec Foundation. Lisakhanya is grateful for the support hub. “This has helped a lot!”
