Nature trip is a learning adventure

E’Miyah S. had never stayed in a cabin before. But she and her Indianapolis Christel House Academy South 4th grade classmates enjoyed their first overnight Camptown experience. Taking the classroom outside, kids explore nature through a series of fun activities that develop independence, collaboration and leadership skills. “My favorite part was the morning hike seeing the different trees and plants,” says E’Miyah. “It’s a fun way to learn." The trip to McCormick’s Creek State Park in Indiana included exploring a cave, cooking dinner over a campfire, and taking a hike after dark. “The night hike can be intimidating for students,” says Christina Summers, one of the trip chaperones. “But it’s really empowering and fun.” E’Miyah had one other highlight. “I liked learning how to make s’mores!”

Camptown trips for Christel House students are made possible thanks to OneAmerica and the Kiwanis Foundation of Indianapolis.
