Cadet teachers get classroom experience

Charles J., a senior at Christel House Academy South (CHAS), was interested in becoming a teacher. Now he’s getting hands-on classroom experience working with kindergarten students through a Cadet Teaching program – and earning college credit, too. In its second year, the Cadet Teaching program has over a dozen students participating. Charles is enjoying the classroom work and now plans a career in secondary education, specializing in mathematics. Carey Dahncke, Christel House Head of Schools says developing teachers for urban schools is a priority. “Our students come from challenging backgrounds. At the end of the day, who else would know best how to reach our population but our own students who become teachers as adults?”
