Academy South Students Launch Mentor Program

We can all appreciate having someone who looks out for us. Three high school seniors at Christel House Academy South are taking the lead to create a mentoring program where older students in grades 8 to 12 become mentors of kids in kindergarten through 5th grade. Dionne S., Joseline C., and Zicri A. organized the effort and got many of their classmates involved. Dionne was inspired when she helped a younger student last year. “This is kind of what I want to do in school,” she said. The seniors worked with teachers to match classmates as part of their service project. Over 40 mentors received training as part College for Every Student, an initiative which supports the mentor program. Mentors and mentees will meet at least once a week. Alicia Hervey, Dean of Student Development is impressed by the commitment of this group. “I cannot be more excited for them and the work they’ve done. This has been fantastic.”
